Blizzard announces Battle.net forum overhaul and Real ID integration 07.07.2010 by Webnet

Blizzard is integrating Real ID into a huge site update to be expected prior to the release date of July 27th. Outlined in these details include member names or handles disappearing and only a poster's real name and optionally a primary character name showing. Their hope is that this will reduce the amount of spam and flame wars that the forums are notorious for.

The first and most significant change is that in the near future, anyone posting or replying to a post on official Blizzard forums will be doing so using their Real ID -- that is, their real-life first and last name -- with the option to also display the name of their primary in-game character alongside it. These changes will go into effect on all StarCraft II forums with the launch of the new community site prior to the July 27 release of the game, with the World of Warcraft site and forums following suit near the launch of Cataclysm. The classic Battle.net forums, including those for Diablo II and Warcraft III, will be moving to a new legacy forum section with the release of the StarCraft II community site and at that time will also transition to using Real ID for posting.

The official forums have always been a great place to discuss the latest info on our games, offer ideas and suggestions, and share experiences with other players -- however, the forums have also earned a reputation as a place where flame wars, trolling, and other unpleasantness run wild. Removing the veil of anonymity typical to online dialogue will contribute to a more positive forum environment, promote constructive conversations, and connect the Blizzard community in ways they haven’t been connected before. With this change, you’ll see blue posters (i.e. Blizzard employees) posting by their real first and last names on our forums as well.

BIG Blizzard is BIG Brother
New Blizzard = fail blog.
I've splitted oppinions about this.. I understand the good purpoce of trying to reduce spaming and badbehavior.

But, it's also an privacy issue to me, whe everyone, just everyone can see who you really are, I've tried to hidemyself behind, "gamenames for the sake of privacy." This makes my "privacy security sence"

Now, what ever I say, might impact in real life, That I'm really conserned.
I'm not sure wtf Blizzard was thinking.
That is right, but forums are supposed to be a place that encourages discussion, gameplay mechanics and strategy.

Now I know the bnet forums were a troll nest so far, but that's only because they were moderated so poorly.

With this change, they will alienate most of the fans from the forums. A poll that counted ~4000 people, 78% said they will stop posting.
Hrmm.... you guys bring up some good points. But... it is completely optional whether you plan to take part in the forums to begin with.
You can't put a fake name unless you don't intend to use your credit card - an you probably will, either if you play wow, or buy premium maps for sc2. The account automatically puts the name from your card (which has to be real or the card won't work).
people will just now put down fake names.
Females are obviously going to stay far, far away from the forums, but we've all heard news of people seeking (and often obtaining) real life revenge on something they've done to someone in game. With the bnet forum, finding someone will be ridiculously easy unless their name is John Smith or something.
I'll be honest, I am worried about creepy weird-o's targeting girl gamers. Not like it doesn't happen enough when they find out the girl's name, but now they can search city and state by first and last name. Creepy
